So you have a Samsung Galaxy S and you want to upgrade your firmware to Gingerbread (2.3), an upgrade above Froyo which is 2.2. Well it’s not out officially yet, and their has been speculation about the leaked version of Gingerbread which you could hack to work on your Android phone, but I personally will wait for the official release if there is potential for one. There is also word that the Galaxy S will never get Gingerbread. I do not believe this, as it can be hacked otherwise. I remember reading somewhere that since two other phone models were getting updated to Gingerbread as a free upgrade, Samsung would be doing it too. I cannot remember where I read this and I can’t find the article anywhere, when I find it I’ll update this thread, please comment to remind me too!. Anyways, here’s a video on how you can upgrade your Android 2.2.1 to Darky’s Custom ROM Gingerbread Edition.
Though I think there is potential, or hope that Samsung will release an official upgrade, which saves the hassle of hacking the phone and possibly bricking it. All in all, I am happy with Froyo right now, it works great but it would be nice to have more features that Gingerbread carries.
Also, another fact to add, or just a theory, I believe everytime an update comes out for an Android phone there will be this kind of hype. People hacking there phones to get the updates on their phones and so on. But that’s the beauty of owning an Android phone too. You can do this hacking and Google doesnt care, their OS for phones is Open Source, not controlled by them. And with the iPhone, you can jailbreak it but who cares about that stuff, Android phones are the way to go. I only prefer to use Apple computers, thank you.
Update: I found a article stating that Gingerbread will be coming at the end of March, but this is April and it states it’s only for Romanians but I feel there is potential for Canadians and Americans that have the Galaxy S. Another interesting fact is that the Galaxy S is the best selling Android phone in the world, good to know eh?. I would agree with that fact because it just looks and feels like the iPhone and a couple of my buddy’s got the phone too. Every time they try a new app they tell me to check it out. Any cool apps I encounter I write a review and post it on this blog, so stay tuned!.
