I had to find that image from another site because I couldn’t take a screenshot properly, Firefox keeps closing by itself. I have tried things and tried again, I’m sick of this problem while using Windows XP Home 32-bit. I am obviously using Firefox 14.0.1, and I tried downgrading Firefox to 3.6. The second I did that it upgraded itself without even asking. What do you get from a browser that’s been around for years and has been trust worthy for the most part, first and foremost, while I was using Windows XP the whole time too?.
What makes a browser crash so much?. Even in a profile I created in Firefox called “Guest” without any extensions, it still crashes. I can’t downgrade for the third time because I know I won’t be able to stay using Firefox 3.6, it will just eventually upgrade itself. I am providing two options here for you guys to try. But the second option was a personal option I took, so most of you will be using Option 1 I am sure.
Option 1:
Okay, I just did a Google search and here is a possible solution, to disable updates in Firefox once I downgrade. I will try this, and will let you guys know if it works good enough.
Here are the directions:
Beforehand, first install Firefox 3.6.
1. With Firefox launched, click on “Tools”.
2. While in “Tools”, click on “Options”.
3. In the Advanced pane, click on “Update”.
4. Under Update, click on “Ask me what I want to do”.
5. Click on “Ok”.
Now when there is an update, you can ignore it manually by clicking “No” instead of “Yes” when the update option window pops up.
Of course that window does not show the right version of Firefox as the current upgrade available (obviously 14.0.1). But you get the idea, that should be what it looks like, so all you’ve got to do then is click “Not Now”.
Option 2:
My own personal solution for myself unfortunately was to switch browsers, which may only be temporaily. I still love Firefox, and the Mozilla team. So I am trying a totally random browser called Maxthon 3, which is for Windows only.
So far, it’s a great browser. According to Wikipedia it was originally known as “MyIE2″, which is a freeware web browser for Microsoft Windows (obviously), and is also for the Android which is called “Maxthon Mobile”. The newest release, named Maxthon 3, supports Trident and also the WebKit renduring engines.
Maxthon won awards from CNET’s WebWare 100 Awards in 2008 and also 2009, and is PCWorld’s list of the 100 best products for the year of 2011. Maxthon is the highest scoring browser on the site HTML5Test.com, which is a site that ranks browsers for the basis of the support for the HTML5 standard and also other related specifications.
Okay here’s the interesting part, Maxthon was based on MyIE, which is a popular modification that was created by a Chinese programmer named Changyou in order to customize Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer web browser. Changyou had posted the majority of the source code for MyIE on his own Bulletin board system before giving up on the project in 2000. Chen then worked on it independently in developing MyIE and then in 2002 released a whole new version called MyIE2. Users then around the world were very active in helping out in the development of MyIE2, while adding numerous plugins, skins and also helping out with the debugging. MyIE2 was then renamed to Maxthon in 2003. Whew, it’s been 9 years already and this browser is still kicking. What’s also amazing is that they have kept the versions of the browser very minimal, where Firefox is now up to version 14.
