Alright people, I just discovered a way to get your music off your iPod or iPhone (and possibly your iPad) without needing software like Yamipod, which only works half the time. I’ll explain what Yamipod is at the bottom of this post, incase this tutorial confuses you, but it shouldn’t for most computer literate people, maybe even for non-computer literate people.

Alright, first off make sure you have at least iTunes 10, I know most of you will have that one as it has been out for awhile, we just need the iTunes version that has the “Keep folders organized” feature. That may be in older versions of iTunes just so you know, but I don’t know specifically when that feature was implemented. I am guessing around version 7 of iTunes, since in this link it says in iTunes 8.2.1 or earlier this feature exists, as the link is the Apple page for “iTunes: Understanding Media Organization”.

This feature is the key to getting the music off of our iPod’s, organized.

This guide is easy to follow in Mac OS X if you find the menu’s that will be in slightly different places, it shouldn’t be too hard to try out. Just comment on this post if you have a Mac and your stuck!. I used a normal iPod Nano for this tutorial, so I am not sure if it will work for the iPhone or iPad but they are iOS devices, and I am positive this should work on the iPod Classic. And of course the iPod Touch should work too.

This is the first step:

1) Make sure you have iTunes installed. Plug your iPod into your PC, go to My Computer in Windows XP, or Vista/7 in Computer. You will see an iPod symbol shown in the Devices with Removable Storage. The icon may look different though, in the photo below you’ll see the Windows 2000/xp view, which just shows a picture of a removable device, or a hard drive etc. In Windows 7, I right clicked on my iPod (which did look like an iPod that was black) and I clicked on “open as portable device”.

2) Now you will see either a bunch of files or another folder which will be by itself, so just click on it then you will see files that look like this assortment, and you simply want to click on “iPod_Control”.

3) I couldn’t get the image to look bigger, but anyways the folder is there, so click on it and you’ll see more files and you just want to click on “Music” and now we are in the gold mine, we are now going to create a new folder onto the desktop by right clicking onto the desktop and clicking and selecting New, then clicking Folder. Now go to your Music folder you navigated to, then hold down Control+A on your keyboard, then drag all those files into your New Folder.

4) Now you must drag that folder into your Music folder, or My Music in Windows XP/2000. Now launch iTunes, go to Edit, then Preferences, then Advanced.

5) Now you will see all the controls we need. First you need to click on Change and select your actual Music or My Music folder, then click on “Keep iTunes Media folder organized”. Now click Ok, and drag and drop your New Folder onto iTunes into the Library field and let the magic begin!. Your music on your iPod will already be tagged, even though that pile of files are all named different things. This organization feature that Apple created will store the tagged music all in the right folders that goes by Artist, then the Album name. Apple basically made it possible for us to get our music off of our iPods, imagine that.

Oh!, and if you want to try Yamipod instead of doing this tutorial, it may just work for you and it’s easy to try without breaking anything, the worst thing that could happen is that it may tell you it just doesn’t work. That’s what it said to me last time I tried to use it, and while thinking technically for 5 minutes I figured out this method to get my music off my iPod without any additional software than iTunes itself.

The program is pretty organized, and make sure before you use it, to close iTunes, and have your iPod connected before you launch Yamipod too. This software is obviously free and open source too.
