BGR noted earlier this week, that a number of complaints concerning the iPhone 4S in the Apple support forums were posted. Among these issues are echoes when using the iPhone 4S and a headset, and calls typically degrading during a conversation. Another thread on this issue has reached up to 14 pages, with a number of users claiming a variety of different phone models and carriers from which they are using.
When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.
Customers seem to also be experiencing some success with fixing the issue by toggling the speakerphone button on and off when the echoeing starts off.
Another potentially related problem with the static of the iPhone 4S calls is something being documented within it’s own thread, with the issue both effecting incoming and outgoing calls, with some users that are reporting the issues are happening on multiple handests as they’ve exchanged devices at retail stores in attempt to try to fix the problem.
And last but not least, the third issue is being tracked in a nearly 300-post thread of users talking about experiencing no audio on their subset of outgoing phone calls.
Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S – 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.
And for the echoing issue, some users have said that toggling the speakerphone option be fix tha lack of audio on any outgoing or incoming calls, but others are saying that tactic doesn’t always work. For it’s part, Apple’s support staff are unable and unwilling to even try to diagnose these issues as far as either software or hardware problems are concerned. There is at least one customer saying that the first developer beta of iOS 5.0.1 that was released yesterday doesn’t fix any of these problems.
