Coming from the same old Japanese blog about Macs named Macotakara, has reported that Apple will be creating a new design for the upcoming next generation iPod nano coming later this year with a whole new form factor that is alot more closely focused on the iPod touch design. The report says that the iPad nano will be a equipped with a screen that is rectangular and will come with a home button which is alot like the home buttons found on other iOS devices .
With it being a given that the screen size on this whole new redesigned iPod nano would look alot smaller than the cirrent iPhone/iPod touch, it kind of seems somewhat unlikely that the iPad nano would be running any kind of apps through iOS. Though Apple most likely will be using their current custom OS on this device and would have apps made to look like iOS as you can find on the most current incarnation of the iPod nano.
This report shows as well that Apple will bring through a whole new “dedicated iTunes service” to this device, though there is no word on what the service would be entailing.
The iPod lines from Apple have usually trended to the much smaller form factors with each and every redesign, though this new reumored redesign would be appearing to be making a huge increase in size compared to the normal form factor, which was actually revealed in September of 2010. Many leaked photos have shown that Apple may be planning to add a camera to the much smaller form factor, though it is appearing that the company may also be scrapping those plans all together.
It wouldn’t be unprecedented, though, if Apple was to think that smaller may actually not be that much better, and in particular if the iPod nano itself could see more functionality within the newest design. Apple has already removed the buttons virtually from the iPod shuffle as of March 2009 where they then moved controls all over to the headphone cord, though in September 2010 a redesign showed the return of the click wheel and on many other on-device buttons aswell.
Now for my own input on this. I think that this would be a wise move from Apple. They are moving towards making an “iPod touch mini” in a way, like they are planning with the iPad, with the “iPad mini” for that iOS product. Other rumors have pointed towards an iPhone mini aswell. But the form factor specifically points towards this new mp3 player being like an “iPod touch mini”. Could it have Wi-Fi?, we will just have to wait and see. Of course, I am more excited towards the newest iPhone 5 than any other Apple product, but this one would be simply interesting within itself.
