The battle that is currently ongoing with Samsung and Apple might be getting alot more intense coming this February. It has been reported by BGR that Samsung is in preporations to release their own high resolution 11.6″ tablet which will have a resolution of 2560 x 1600.
Even though the tablet features a larger display than Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, we’re told that the tablet is “barely larger” due to the fact the slate will have a thinner bezel with a whopping 2560 x 1600 resolution, 11.6-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio.
A screen resolution of 2560 x 1600 would actually stomp the 2048 x 1536 display that the iPad 3 is rumored to have.
The 2560 x 1600 screen resolution was in a screen that Samsung introduced before back in May at the SID Display Week at the 2011 International Symposium. Though that screen was, however, used in a much different technology called PenTile which was used to achieve it’s higher resolution which was critized for some drawbacks that were potentially making it crap.
The PenTile display uses a series of local filter operations to convert the underlying image into display intensities, including convolution, thresholding, color curve adjustment, and postprocessing with locally-adaptive filters. In practice, this means the display blurs the red and blue channels by dispersing these color intensities to the nearest subpixel element of the right color, and then also implements subpixel positioning to increase the apparent resolution again. However, subpixel spacing is not constant across the display, making the real apparent resolution complicated to estimate
Samsung and Apple have been long rumored to be working on a higher resolution iPad display that could carry an even higher resolution vertically and horizontally within the iPad. A similar kind of method was used by Apple when they upgraded the iPhone’s screen from 480×320 to 960×640. The iPad 3 is being expected to have a resolution of 2048×1536 coming from a normal resolution of 1024×768 which is in the current iPad right now. It has been suggested within rumors that there may be holdups in the productions on making these higher resolution screens in higher quantities. The reports that have been made lately are suggesting that Apple may be able to release the iPad 3 as soon as February, though the reports have also suggested a slightly later release if it is not released in February.
