This current day marks the one-year annual anniversary for the release of the Mac App Store, which is the attempt of Apple to reproduce the software market by offering it through an online store rather than by the box in their usual offering in their online retail store. Their store provides Mac apps linked to the company`s own existing iTunes Store application base.
The App Store for the Mac has gained alot of popularity from last year as Apple have already included more and more of their own software there to this new marketplace, while even going for App Store to offer their latest operating system on it too, for OS X Lion. Just about less than a year ago from the release of the store, over 100 million downloads was made which doesn`t include the purchases of OS X Lion, application updates, or more than one download from one single transaction.
Within that effort made to compile the success of the Mac App Store that has been established within the Mac software companies, MacRumors talked with Aspyr, whom now offers over a dozen games through the store which is including their current top profitable game and also now the Mac App Store Game of the Year aswell, named Civilization V: Campaign Edition (Mac App Store). Other big names in games includes Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty 4, and last but not least Doom 3.
The developer Aspyr, has a very unique position within the Mac App Store currently while other Mac App Store developers are already offering a wide variety of digital downloads through the platform called GameAgent, the marketplace. Though the Mac App Store has been able to attract even a bigger amount of business from the customers of Aspyr, while we`ve been told by Aspyr that the Mac App Store had taken account for sales in the numbers of 500,000 which is all the units across all of the titles created by Aspyr for 2011, which is in the numbers of 50-60% of the business for the company`s digital distributional business sales.
Aspyr has creditted in paticular the Mac App Store with their new breathing life with offering older titles available for download aswell, which brings them in to even more attention from alot more casual gamers who normally would have not even looked at the games. Though something that is not suprising is that the games that were receiving the featured treatment directly from Apple in the banner form and other mentions through promotions, the strongest game performance has been taken by Aspyr.
Though even more beyond the Mac App Store aswell, it has been cited by Aspyr of their general growth rate within the Mac operating system, as another drive for even more sales of software titles. Apple`s Mac OS has been building up momentum in outnumbering the PC in the market growth overall every quarter for the past six years, though most recently being marked at the 12.9% market share rating for the third quarter of 2011 already.
Though overall, the Mac App Store has remained to be very hugely-skewed directly towards Apple`s own software with the number six most popular applications and also the eight biggest-and-most-profitable applications in the store actually being Apple`s own software. Though with that high amount of volume of the downloads being made in the store, numerous developers are now clearly seeing the success behind the store as it is proving itself to be popular within Mac users that are looking for an easy place to buy and install new applications. According to the sister of Macrumors, AppShopper, there are over 8,900 apps that are currently now available in the Mac App Store, which makes another record for a huge library of content now which can be easily found and can be easily downloaded from this now year old marketplace.
